‘I love Donny’ says Yorkshire’s Green Party MEP Magid on his tour of Doncaster

Mr Magid, MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, wandered through the high street on Tuesday, August 20, talking to business owners and people on the street about his Tour De Magid across Yorkshire.

He visited the new wool market, the Back in Time café and the Queen pub as part of a tour across Yorkshire - dubbed the 'Tour de Magid'.

The former Lord Mayor of Sheffield said: “I absolutely love Donny - I’ve been here many times before.

“Something that resonates with me is how warm the people are.”

“For me, being part of this Tour De Magid, where I’m literally going around Yorkshire and the Humber and speaking to as many people as possible.

“As the elected representative for this region in the European Parliament, it’s my duty to actually go out there and talk to ordinary people and find out what their hopes and fears are.

“So that I can feel that I can best represent them and to say thank you to those people who helped to elect me.

“But also having really awkward and difficult conversations with those people who didn’t vote for me but still letting them know that I care.”

“I remember when I was originally campaigning and nobody knew who the MEP was.

“I felt like there was a disconnect between ordinary citizens and the European Union and I knew I had to put myself out there to bridge that gap”

Mr Magid had an impact on the youth of Sheffield city when he was their mayor - an influx of young people took an interest in politics and engaged with the council in a way which hasn’t been seen before.

He said: “A lot of young people don’t care because they don’t think anybody is listening to them.

“I think the first thing Doncaster could do is to actually listen to young people to make them feel like they do have a voice and they do matter.

“Empower young people - Doncaster is a town which is rich in people and resources but it’s about giving young people the tools to make a difference.

“Let’s get them elected into council and show other young people that yes we are represented.”

Magid believes that the UK should stay in the EU - a message he is debating with many on his tour of Yorkshire.

He said: “People voted to leave for many reasons and I can understand why a lot of people voted to leave.

“I think people were frustrated and people wanted a change. They felt neglected and left behind.

“There are so many social issues that people want to fundamentally change.

“Nobody voted to be poorer off and people are angry.

“Don’t believe Boris Johnson.

“It’s people like him who are not going to feel the effects of Brexit - the rich fundamentally don’t care about the people of Doncaster whatsoever.

“And there the people that are pushing Brexit for their own agenda.”As a Green Party member Magid has strong views about the environment and what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint.

“It’s not an exaggeration when we say it’s action or extinction,” Magic continued.

“We have 11 short years to do something about it - and it’s not me saying that it’s the world’s top scientists.

“That’s in our lifetime and we need to do something about it.

“There’s a lot of things people can do - be a bit more socially aware and checking yourself on things like using single use plastics and recycling.

“Put pressure on your council and elected councillors.
