A nasty head injury saw Doncaster lose midfielder Tim Shelley midway through the first half and the hosts, who had scored through Alex Kerly, found themelves 2-1 down at the break.
The game came alive in the last five minutes as Doncaster came from behind to take the lead with just three minutes left.
Two penalty corner goals from skipper Matt Gibson put Doncaster 3-2 ahead, only for them to be denied by an Ed James strike with two minutes remaining.
Doncaster host Preston on Sunday (2pm).
