Helicopter sent in to help tackle fire at Doncaster beauty spot

A Fire and Rescue helicopter has been sent to Hatfield Moors to drop water taken from lakes onto the inferno that continues to rage at the beauty spot.

The blaze, which could continue for days due to high peat levels in the land, began on Sunday night (May 17).

It has already destroyed acres of moorland and devastated wildlife habitats.

The specialist helicopter will be dropping large amounts of water from designated lakes on to the moors.

Firefighters are also continuing to fight the fires using beaters and water backpacks while a drone is being used to identify hot spots that need to be taken care of.

South Yorkshire Fore and Rescue have warned people not to go out onto the moors to look at the fires, and have asked for people to allow them to do their job.

No one has been injured in the fire, which was first reported at around 5.30pm on Sunday.
