Gavin McDonnell: '˜I won't stop until I outdo my brother'

The Dunscroft fighter comfortably out-pointed Jorge Sanchez of Panama in a WBC super bantamweight title eliminator, also winning the WBC Silver title in the process.

And with his sights set on a world title fight before the end of the year, McDonnell says he will not retire until he has bettered his two time world bantamweight champion twin.

“I won’t stop until I outdo him,” McDonnell said with a big smile. There’s no way I’m retiring as number two in the family, no way.”

McDonnell has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the wake of his brother, winning Central Area, British and European titles in little more than five years since his debut.

His crowning achievement so far on Saturday night came on British boxing’s biggest night in recent years as Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg met in a highly-anticipated world title unification fight.

McDonnell said: “It just snowballs from one thing to another. It keeps getting better.

“I fought at Sheffield Arena a couple of times in front of 9,000.

“The weigh in for this had five or six thousand and then I fought in front of a packed arena.

“Hopefully now we go out this year and win a world title.”

Also on Saturday night, Woodlands’ Jason Cunningham won the English bantamweight title for the second time with a comfortable points win over Ashley Lane at the Dome.
