Earlier this year, the budget airline announced that it was establishing a new base and new routes out of the airport.

But because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the launch of the new routes has now been put on hold.

A spokesman for the airline said: “Wizz Air has not postponed the opening of its Doncaster base, however a select number of routes which were due to start in October will now launch in December.

"Wizz Air apologises for any inconvenience caused to passengers whose flights have been cancelled.

"Passengers who booked directly with Wizz will be notified and offered the options of rebooking for free, receiving 120% of the fare in Wizz credit or a full cash refund via the original payment method. Passengers who booked their tickets via travel agencies or online travel platforms should contact those companies to request a refund.”

A spokesman for Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “Every airline is currently having to make flight cancellations in line with government travel restrictions and this is no different for Wizz Air. However, we can confirm that the Wizz Air base is still expected to open at Doncaster Sheffield Airport on October 22 and we are looking forward to welcoming passengers.

“These continue to be extraordinarily difficult times for the aviation industry and airports. The sector continues to await news of the bespoke package of support that was previously advised would become available in April.

“However, despite the challenges we are facing, the rate of growth at Doncaster Sheffield Airport has been market-leading for a sustained 5 year period and we are pleased to say that this continues to be the case despite the current situation.”

In August, the firm announced its expansion at the airport by establishing a base with the addition of a second Airbus A320 aircraft and six new routes to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Lisbon and Eindhoven.

The airport has stayed open throughout the pandemic but a number of flights and routes have been axed.
