David Martin, of Sycamore Grove, Cantley, was found not guilty , by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court of 19 counts of sexual and indecent assault, said to have taken place between 1994 and 2010.

The offences were said to have happened in the Doncaster area. The 67-year-old served as a police constable with South Yorkshire Police and was based in Doncaster before retiring from the force in 2003.

He had been accused of repeatedly abusing one girl over a 15-year period.

Mr Martin had also been accused of groping another girl, now aged 36, after calling at her house while looking for a missing boy.

It had been claimed the incident had happened in front of her parents while he was carrying out door-to-door inquiries and the complainant was aged around 15.

The woman told police that after her father died the following year, Martin continued to show up at her home uninvited, and while she said he didn’t touch her again, he did make her feel uncomfortable, the court was told.

His other alleged victim was said to have been abused by Martin on numerous occasions into her early 20s.

In November, South Yorkshire Police revealed it had investigated Mr Martin for ‘non-recent child sex offences’ and he had been charged by the Crown Prosecution Service.

He appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court for a preliminary hearing the same month, where he was charged with the indecent assault of two girls under the age of 16.

That led to the case being sent to Sheffield Crown Court, where his trial for the alleged offences started earlier this month.

Throughout the criminal proceedings, Mr Martin maintained he was innocent of the allegations that had been made against him by the two women and pursued by the police and the CPS.
