Humberside Police were called out to the scene at 3.12am to discover the abandoned fork lift vehicle, and that the thieves had made off from the scene with the ATM.

A spokesman said: “

Police are also investigating the possible link of a very similar incident which took place in the village of Blyth in the early hours of December 9 when a stolen heavy duty digger was used in a raid on a cash point.

The offenders escaped with a safe in a Toyota Hilux after the thieves hit the High Street ATM at around 3.30am.

The excavation vehicle and cash machine were left abandoned at the scene.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “At this stage it is too early to say whether this incident is related to any other similar incident in neighbouring areas, however police enquiries are ongoing and liaison with other forces is a routine consideration in an enquiry of this nature.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Humberside Police on 101 quoting log number 42 of Tuesday December 16.
