Doncaster’s first ever Tree of the Year competition launches

City of Doncaster Council has launched the Tree of the Year competition and is inviting people across the city to nominate a favourite local tree.

It could be a tree with historical significance, a local landmark, a favourite tree in your local park or one you pass while walking the dog. Many trees can hold dear memories and inspire stories and the council would love to hear all about them. Maybe it’s a majestic Maple or an ancient oak or a stunning sycamore which gets your vote.

Councillor Glyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Housing and Safer Communities, said: “Trees play an important role in both our landscapes and our lives. Doncaster’s Tree of the Year is an opportunity to celebrate our most iconic, beloved, or ecologically significant trees. The project aims to raise awareness of urban greenery, foster community pride and highlight the importance of tree preservation in Doncaster.”

Send a photo with a description, in 100 words or less, why the tree is so special by emailing [email protected]. Closing date is August 1.

The entries will be shortlisted by a panel of judges and will then go out to public vote in the last couple weeks of August. The winning tree will be published online and a plaque will be organised to go beside the tree.
