Council see decrease in fly-tipping reports during lockdown

Across the country, local authorities have faced a huge clean-up bill as fly-tipping has skyrocketed by 300 percent in some areas.

The Countryside Alliance says it has seen a huge increase as people undertake home improvements duing the lockdown, while many local authorities have had to close their recycling centres to concerntrate on bin collections.

A spokesman said: "We must all remember that fly-tipping is not a victimless crime and has a significant impact on rural areas and wildlife.

"Many local authorities have had to shut waste recycling centres at this time and are concentrating on keeping kerbside collections going.

"So, we all have a responsibility to do our bit, never more so than at this difficult time and we are calling on everyone to dispose of their waste legally. You could face prosecution if you are caught fly-tipping or giving your rubbish to a rogue waste disposal system."

At least four dumping sites have been reported in Rotherham through April on reporting site Clear Waste - at Shipman Balk, Blyth Avenue, Thrybergh Lane, and Psalters Close.

Coun Sophie WIlson, who represents Beighton ward on Sheffield Council, tweeted a picture of a fly-tipping site at Guilthwaites Common near Whiston, as one example of the mess left behind.

Tom Smith, Rotherham Council assistant director of community safety and street scene, said: “We have seen a decrease in reported fly-tipping since household waste recycling centres were closed.“However, we are conscious fewer people are out and about to make reports.

“Officers are closely monitoring levels of fly-tipping across the borough, and anyone can report fly tipped waste through the council's website.

“Fly-tipping remains illegal and we will continue to fine and prosecute anyone committing this offence.

“At this time, when many people are unwell and a number have died, we would urge residents to deal with their waste responsibly, not to make unnecessary journeys, and be patient while we make the necessary changes to services so that we can get back to normal as soon as possible.”
