Incredibly, no one in the vehicle or on the train was injured, although the car was wrecked and one of the train’s carriages suffered a smashed window as well as bodywork damage.

Now South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the driver of the car fled the scene and is now being hunted by officers.

“The driver of the Range Rover left the vehicle and fled the scene.

"The train continued on the tracks stopping a short time later.

"There were no injuries reported from the train, although it suffered extensive damage and delays on the line.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver of the vehicle, anybody with information should contact the police on 101 quoting incident number 1015 of 13 June.”

The incident caused significant disruption on the East Coast Main Line although engineers spent the night carrying out emergency repairs so the crossing could re-open this morning.
