Doncaster venue calls off firework display after too many people watched for free
They say it has become increasingly difficult to justifiy the cost
Bosses at a Doncaster venue say they have called off an annual Bonfire Night fireworks display with “a heavy heart” - blaming too many people watching last year’s display for free from outside.
Park View Sports Bar in Mexborough has confirmed the plug has been pulled on this year’s event because of rising costs.

A statement on Facebook by owner Michelle Carr said: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that, unfortunately, Park View Sports Bar will not be holding its annual firework display this year.
“This has been an incredibly difficult decision, particularly as this event has taken place every year for the past 14 years.
“However, following last year's event, it has become increasingly difficult to justify the substantial costs involved in organising a display of this size.
“The fireworks alone cost thousands of pounds, and when you add the cost of security, staffing and all the other expenses involved in running a safe and successful event, the financial commitment is considerable.
“Unfortunately, last year we received very little support from people attending the event, with many choosing to watch the display for free from the adjoining park rather than supporting the event on site.
“We have also faced difficulties attracting stallholders, many of whom have supported us year after year.
“Vendors have understandably become reluctant to attend when outside street sellers and food stalls set up nearby, taking business away from those who have committed to trading within our event.

“On top of this, there are now other free events taking place locally on the same evenings, including church and community events.
“While these events are often supported by council funding, Park View's firework display has been a privately funded event, with the financial responsibility falling entirely on us.
“We have always tried our best to make this a community event for everyone to enjoy. However, a community event cannot continue without community support, particularly when the costs involved continue to rise year after year.
“After much consideration, I have had to accept that, sadly, the event is no longer financially viable.
“I know this announcement will disappoint many people, and I am genuinely sorry that we will not be able to bring you the display this year. Please understand that this decision has not been made lightly.
“Sometimes, despite our best efforts, circumstances change and difficult decisions have to be made.”
