Roadworks taking place near a Doncaster supermarket are to be extended after workers discovered they didn’t have enough cable equipment to finish the job.

Works have been taking place in West End Lane, Rossington outside the Lidl supermarket to lay new electricity cables between the village and Armthorpe.

But disruption is set to continue after cables being used on the job were found to be 15 metres short.

A spokesman for Doncaster Council said: “We have been advised by the contractor that they have encountered a problem during this specific operation on West End Lane in the vicinity of Lidl store roundabout, as they have discovered that the cables -which are supplied in 300 metre length drums - have been found to be 15 metres short.

“Having laid the carriageway ducts along much of the route, they had begun to install the cables.

"In consequence, due to the large diameter of these cables which they are unable to withdraw, there will now be need for a new joint bay location that will extend into/close to the carriageway which will now need traffic control.

“It is anticipated these works will need to remain in place until early next week, although the permit to work will extend until Friday which fortunately will be during the quieter school holiday period, although there will still be a requirement for signals to be manually controlled between the hours of 7am to 7pm.

“Information boards will be erected on site ASAP highlighting the duration of these works and it has also been requested that the management of Lidl be advised.”
