And the 21-year-old says they now have to replicate their heroics on a regular basis and show they have the quality to compete in League One.

“This has to be the standard now,” he said.

“We’ve set it and we need to show it week in, week out.

“We know we can definitely turn anyone over.

“We went to Blackburn and outclassed them. And Saturday can hopefully be a springboard for us.”

There has been a general feeling that Rovers’ performances have not generated the results they have deserved so far this season.

And Whiteman says he felt a win in the manner of that against Southend had been coming.

“I can’t believe it’s not come sooner,” he said.

“Sloppy goals have been costing us, final passes and maybe missing chances.

“We’ve always been confident in camp that we can turn teams over in this league.

“I think although it’s been disappointing that we’ve not been picking up results, we have been playing well and creating chances.

“Hopefully it can be a springboard up the league for us.

“We’ve always been confident in camp that we’re going to do something but Saturday is the first time we’ve really put anyone to the sword.

“We showed that we can defend and get after teams and I think it’s been coming all season.”
