The 33-year-old played for the Latics in their 1-0 friendly defeat to Wigan on Tuesday night.

Green turned out for Rovers at Rossington Main earlier this month and travelled with them to Scotland for their pre-season training camp - sparking a frenzy among fans that the former favourite could be about to return.

The Free Press understands Rovers were keen to sign Green despite boss Darren Ferguson playing down the speculation.

Oldham boss Stephen Robinson said earlier this week: “In terms of experience, he does a similar job to Peter Clarke in the back four.

“We know what we’re trying to bring in and he’s the type of player that fits the bill and hopefully we can sort something out.

“I think Ryan Flynn and Ollie Banks were different players with him in there.

“Players like him (Green) go unnoticed sometimes, but they are massive in what we are trying to do here. We’d love to have him at the football club.”

When asked about Green following Tuesday’s friendly win over York City, Ferguson said: “Nothing will be happening with Paul.

“He was only ever training with us.

“He’s had one or two offers from clubs in higher divisions. He asked to train with us and we let him do that.”
