McCann, who has backed the Londoner to break the 30-goal barrier this season, admits Rovers are lucky to have him.

'What he's done for the football club during his time here is fantastic,' said McCann.

'It's a remarkable scoring rate '“ virtually one in two.

'He is in my opinion one of the best strikers in this league.

'We're lucky to have him.

'He drives standards every single day of the week in training and he never settles for second best.

'He's constantly on at the group in training.

'I think he is a real key reason why this group remain focused and don't get above their station.

'Him, Butler and Coppinger and people like that are the experienced heads who drive the group every single day.

'As a manager and a coach, like Cliff [Byrne], it does make your job easier when you've got those sort of standards in your changing room.'

In-form Marquis has seven goals to his name this season and has scored five in his last five games.

'He wears his heart on his sleeve and he works just as hard in training as you see him in a game,' said McCann.

'It's no coincidence he scores the goals he scores because I'm a firm believer you get what you put in, and he leaves everything on the pitch whether it's training or games.

'He's getting the rewards for that effort.

'I had a joke with him saying he should have at least 12 or 13 goals by now. And he knows he probably should.

'But I think he's on course, in my opinion, to get 30 goals this season.'
