Doncaster Rovers: Do it for the fans urges Ferguson

Darren Ferguson has urged his Doncaster Rovers players to send their supporters off on a high note against promotion-winning Wigan Athletic.

Rovers have failed to win in each of their last five matches and threaten to end another season on disappointing form.

But Ferguson says a good result against a Wigan side who could win the League One title at the Keepmoat would be just reward for the backing supporters have given Rovers this season.

“I’m hoping the crowd and the atmosphere will be a good one,” Ferguson said.

“The most important thing, whatever your opinion has been of the whole season, when you play your last game you want a result for your fans because they’ve been with us all the way through it.

“That’s really the basis of what I will be telling all the players.”

Ferguson is looking to lift his players after a disappointing performance in what he labelled as ‘a game too far’ against AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night.

But he feels the clash with Wigan being the final match of the season will see his side deliver a more energetic performance than they did in midweek.

“I felt Tuesday night was a game we could have done without,” he said.

“But with this being the last game, hopefully we should be able to get more out of them.

“Tuesday, we knew we had Saturday but it was a bit too much for us, perhaps for all of us. The performance reflected that.”

Ferguson is understandably expecting a tough game from Paul Cook’s Wigan who know victory will guarantee them the title.

Wigan have lost just once in their last 16 league matches.

Ferguson said: “They’re a very good team and they fully deserve to be with Blackburn in the top two. They have been the two best teams.

“There’s not much can separate them.

“They deserve a hell of a lot of credit. I like the way they play.

“It is going to be a tough game.”
