Marquis hit the landmark figure from the penalty spot in Tuesday night’s 3-2 win at Cambridge United which ended Rovers’ five-game sequence without a win and took them six points clear at the top of League Two.

“It’s a nice thing to have,” said Marquis of his accolade.

“There have been some great strikers that have been here in that time as well.

“I’m happy. It’s obviously my best scoring return for a season.

“I’ve said a lot of times - when you’re playing with such good players it means I do get my fair share of chances and I back myself to take my fair share.

“That’s probably why I’ve got the total I have.

“Twenty is a good landmark for now but there’s still 12 games left and I want to add to that tally.”

Kitchen bagged 23 league goals for Rovers in the 1976/77 season in Division Four.

Since then Paul Heffernan scored 21 in 2006/7 but 11 of those came in cup competitions, while Paul Barnes scored 25 goals in the Conference in 2002/3.
