Sandall Park  will benefit from the project, as the latest phase in the park's development. The  memorial garden will be created in  a neglected and slightly overgrown area.

Funding for the new garden   is from the parkrun and the Friends of Sandall Park organisation, who will in turn  receive £1,500 from Leeds Building Society's Community Reward Scheme.

This initiative, launched in partnership with parkrun, aims to support  the members of parkrun events with projects that make a long-term, positive community difference.

Mark Hudson, Doncaster parkrun event director, said: 'We're delighted to be the first to receive funding as part of Leeds Building Society's Community Reward Scheme.

'Friends of Sandall Park have done great work in the park and our local community. They've been instrumental in the running and success of our parkrun, which now has 300 participants every week.

'It's great to be able to support the memorial garden project, which will create a space for private or shared reflection and somewhere visitors to the park can take time out for themselves.'

The £1,500 award will be used to install seating, fencing and a dedicated entrance to the memorial garden.

Nikki Marsh, director of customer and digital at Leeds Building Society, said: 'The Community Reward Scheme provides funding and volunteer support to projects that help and improve local parkrun communities.

'Assisting Doncaster parkrun and Friends of Sandall Park with their vision of building a memorial garden is a great first project for the Community Reward Scheme.

'It really embodies the purpose of our partnership, to support and bring together local communities. As a mutual, founded on the principle of people helping people, this is important to us.'
