Doncaster named as one of worst places for courier drivers by new study

The study ranks Doncaster as one of the worst places in the UK

Doncaster has been named as one of the worst and most dangerous places in the UK for courier and delivery drivers.

The survey looked at cases of shouting, verbal abuse and harrassment as well as car thefts and robberies to compile the figures.

Key findings were:

Middlesbrough records the highest rate of public order offences, with shouting, verbal abuse and harassment happening 1,322 times per 100K people.

Cars and other vehicles are most likely to be stolen in Doncaster, with over 1,500 incidents in 5 years.

London ranks 10th for courier driver danger, with high chances of thefts and robberies.

The top five places were Middlesbrough, Doncaster, Bradford, Bristol and Birmingham.

To measure the risks for courier drivers in each city, the July 2026 study by delivery insurance provider Street Cover analyzed 6 key crime factors.

For road safety, the traffic crashes in five years as well as the crash rate per 100K residents were taken into account, while the vehicle crime rate assessed how safe it is to leave the car or a motorcycle parked on the street.

For other crime risks, the research calculated the rates for robbery incidents, thefts, public order offences, and looked at a crime risk score that measures vulnerability on a 5-minute walk on a scale of 0-1000.

Doncaster was ranked second, where vehicle crime is at the highest in the country.

In five years, over 1.5K incidents were recorded, which means one in every 100 residents has statistically been a victim of vehicle theft or a similar offence.

The survey said: “Road crashes happen here more often than in Middlesbrough, so courier drivers need to take care of their vehicles while on route, too.

.Alasdair Taylore, Head of Street Cover, commented on the study:“UK drivers lost an average of 59 hours to congestion in 2025, costing the national economy approximately £11 billion.

“For couriers in high-crime cities, congestion isn't just a financial drain. It’s a safety issue.

“Time spent stationary in traffic increases exposure to theft and public order incidents, particularly in dense urban areas.

“Urban traffic congestion already inflates delivery times by up to 50%, which means couriers in cities like Birmingham and Bristol are spending significantly more time in high-risk environments than their route plans account for.”
