Ms Winterton, received the title for her political and parliamentary services, was first elected as MP for the Doncaster Central constituency in 1997.

She was made Opposition Chief Whip under former Labour leader and Doncaster North MP, Ed Miliband and continued in the post when Jeremy Corbyn succeeded Mr Miliband in the role in September.

Ms Winterton is also leading a review into the impact of proposed boundary changes on the Labour party.

She said: "I am absolutely delighted and honoured."

Commenting on Twitter, Dearne MP and Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport Michael Dugher said: “So pleased that the fantastic Donny MP, our brilliant chief whip & my friend Rosie Winterton is to be made a #Dame in the #NewYearsHonours”

MP for Leicester South, Jonathan Ashworth MP said: “There is nothing like a Dame - Over moon for Rosie Winterton. Best Chief Whip I’ve ever had privilege of working with #NewYearHonours.”

Despite praise from her political peers, Ms Winterton’s position could be under threat after a number of recent reports suggest she could be sacked from the Shadow Cabinet in an imminent reshuffle, as Mr Corbyn seeks to impose more discipline on his frontbench team.
