Doncaster man to walk 100 miles this October to raise money for charity

Dean Cook, a Doncaster resident and advocate for sensory inclusion, is taking on the National Autistic Society’s 100 Miles in October Challenge.

A nationwide initiative encouraging people to walk, run, or cycle 100 miles throughout the month to raise awareness and funds for autistic individuals and their families.

The challenge, now a staple of the charity’s annual fundraising calendar, invites participants move at their own pace while sparking conversations about autism and neurodiversity.

Each mile represents progress toward greater understanding, acceptance, and support for autistic people across the UK.

Dean, who works for AmbiSpace to promote accessible environments, says the challenge is about more than fitness, it’s about empathy.

“Every mile represents the moments of overwhelm we work through, the sensory barriers we break down, and the calm spaces we fight to create,” he explains.

“Inclusion isn’t a policy or a buzzword; it’s something we build step by step, mile by mile.”

Throughout October, Dean will share updates via Strava from his walks, reflections,

tough days, and small wins, to highlight the importance of sensory-friendly spaces and community support.

His goal is to help others see that inclusion begins with understanding, and that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Funds raised through the challenge will go directly to the National Autistic Society, supporting its vital work in providing advice, advocacy, and services for autistic people and their families.

The charity also campaigns nationally for better awareness and improved systems in education, employment, and public life.

Residents can support his efforts through his JustGiving page, with every donation helping to create calmer spaces, kinder systems, and a world that truly listens.

As Dean puts it: “Here’s to 100 miles of purpose, community, and hope, walking for those who need understanding and inclusion.”
