Doncaster library in temporary move over fears for building

The risk of damage due to heavy snow and high winds is too high for public use

A Doncaster community library is on the move to new premises over fears its current building could be wrecked by high winds and heavy snow over winter.

Cantley Community Library has announced a temporary move to Cantley Community Centre after a structural survey advised that the building should not be occupied for another winter.

A spokesperson said: “The risk of damage due to heavy snow and high winds is too high to allow public use and so the building should be vacated before November.

“This is very sad news, and plans are in place for an alternative building, but these cannot be realised in the short term.

“Therefore, to avoid total closure we have worked with Cantley Community Centre to move as many of the activities as possible to this location.

“We have also agreed to locate a library hub at the Community Centre.

“There is not enough room to move the stock of books to the centre, but the hub will be able to order books and customers can collect and drop off books there also.”

Alternatively, customers can order books online using the Spydus App and have them transferred to the hub ready for collection.

The current building will close on 31 October this year and the hub will be up and running at the Community Centre from November 2. Opening times remain unchanged

Commenting on the changes, library chairman Richard Halstead said: “It is very sad to see the demise of the building, but the council remain committed to Community Libraries and have worked with us to find this short-term solution at the Community Centre.

“We would like to thank the team at the Community Centre for their support and will continue to work with the council to find a new building so we can return to normal in 2027.

“It is great that we can continue to service the customers and many of our core activities will continue including printing capability. These activities include Chair Yoga, Art Classes, Chatty Café, Citizens Advice Hub, IT for Health Courses, Knit and Natter and 8 Book Clubs.”
