Doncaster Council lost out on £84,000 in parking ticket fines during lockdown, survey says

Data compared parking fine ticket incomes at councils across the country, comparing April to June last year to the same three months this year when the UK was in hard lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And the study by credit broker LeaseFetcher said that Doncaster Council lost a total of £83,289 – a decrease of -87%.

The firm gathered income data using FOI requests to the largest UK councils, including Doncaster.

Figures for 18 of the largest UK cities and 23 London Boroughs showed these councils lost £40,147,790.86 during lockdown compared to the same period of the previous year.

Between April and June 2019, these councils made a cumulative total of £55,698,588.39.

When lockdown hit this year, this sum was squashed right down to £16,550,797.53 - a 70.8% loss.

May was the worst hit month overall, generating only £364,774.43 compared to the £3,467,753.36 the same month the year before (a 89.5% drop).

Things picked up in June for most cities, with the overall income jumping up to £953,909.57 compared to £3,251,920.58 the year before (a 70.7% drop).

As a percentage of their original income, Leicester was the worst affected city, losing 99.21% of their PCN income! Cardiff and Leeds followed, losing 98.6% and 95.1% of their incomes respectively.

Percentage-wise, Birmingham was least affected, losing 68.1% of its income.

In terms of actual monetary value, Glasgow lost the most - the difference between 2019 and 2020 figures showed a £1,209,791.71 decrease.
