Doncaster children’s group appeals for funding to help SEN dancers keep their group going
A dance group in Mexborough needs to raise funds to support their community group.
Aspire SEN Dance Group is run by Sarah White in partnership with Helen Spalding of Spalding School of Dance.
They are sadly struggling to cover the cost of operations - the rent at Mexborough Community Hub (£5) and paying for the teacher and snacks (£40).
Helen insists that she not be paid for her time whilst at the group and is passionate about helping the SEN children who attend her classes.

Dean Cook from AmbiSpace told us: “For many of the dancers the group is more than a hobby, it is a life line.
“Sarah started the club to support her autistic son, who had struggled at school due to targeted bullying. She hoped dance would help him reconnect socially and rediscover the joy of being around others.
“Her daughter Elsie also attends both the SEN group and the Spalding School of Dance.
“Elsie describes dance as her happy place. Sarah shared that Elsie experiences anxiety, and dance has become a powerful tool in helping her manage it.”
The group is a safe space for students to build confidence, strengthen muscles, improve coordination, and enjoy a fun and expressive activity.

For many of the children the social interaction they experience here is valuable as they do not have other safe spaces to explore.
Dean said: “One of the dancers, Rosie, who is an 11-year-old with Down syndrome and is also autistic, absolutely loves the club. “Her parents shared that she struggles with motor skills, and the dance sessions have been incredibly beneficial for her development.
“Parents consistently spoke about how much they value the group, not only for their children, but for themselves.

“Many of the students are autistic, and having a space where parents can share experiences, ask questions, and support one another has become just as important as the dancing itself.”
