David’s was one of four yachts, and it was his third time sailing with the Trust.

David has finished his treatment for testicular cancer at Weston Park Hospital.

He said: “I enjoyed everything about the trip. It’s great speaking to people who have been through the same conditions. We realise we are not alone in this situation...there’s so much positivity!”

The Trust runs a ‘Return to Sail’ programme, aimed at building long term relationships between the Trust and the young people they support, Friendships develop between the young people involved and last in to the future.

The trips also provide a chance for crew members to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking for everyone.

David added: “Ellen MacArthur is great for what she’s done for young people with cancer. I’d tell anyone else to take the opportunity – it’s a great team confidence building exercise.”

Departing from their south coast base in East Cowes Marina, Isle of Wight, the trip navigated the waters of the Solent, which took them to stopovers including Beaulieu, Poole and the picturesque harbour of Lymington for a barbecue. They put their sailing and navigational skills to the test on their return to Cowes.

Now in its 13th year, the Trust is working with every young person Principal Treatment Centre and a growing number of designated units in the UK.
