Officers followed the silver van through the streets of Intake after concerns were raised that it was displaying fake registration plates, and confirmed a man had been arrested following the incident

Doncaster Central neighbourhoods Insp Mark Payling said: “District and Operation Support Unit officers pursued a van that was displaying cloned plates in the Intake area. The 10 minute pursuit was brought to a conclusion by authorised tactical contact.

Police figures last year showed the number of crimes relating to cloned or false number plates has risen by up to 179 per cent nationally.

When buying a new licence plate, a vehicle user should be asked to prove their name and address, as well as their right to use the registration number.

If these checks are not made, it can result in the production of plates with licence numbers that the buyer has no right to use – cloned plates – leaving them free to drive a vehicle which bears the identity of someone else's car.

The consequences of number plate cloning include speeding tickets, parking fines and unpaid toll bills. Motorists will also need to liaise with the DVLA to obtain a new number plate.
