The incident, in the Frenchgate Centre car park, was one of two reports on Monday where officers had to take action after being called over dogs left in hot cars, as non essential shops re-opened.

The other was on Printing Office Street.

A Doncaster Central neighbourhood policing team spokesman said: “In one of the incidents we found the owner a short distance away, they were given appropriate advice.

“In the second incident we have forced entry to the vehicle, by smashing the window, as we could not contact the owner. The dog is now being cared for by officers.”

It was assessed by a vet and then passed to the RSPCA and is ‘fine.’

“Please do not leave animals in your car on warm days, it can kill,” they spokesman added.
