Police hunt man who sexually assaulted woman as she walked next to Doncaster area canal

Police are hunting a man who sexually assaulted a woman as she walked alongside a Doncaster canal in broad daylight.

Officers are appealing for a key witness and information after the attack last Saturday.

Between 12pm and 1pm, the woman, 47, was walking along the Dearne and Dove Canal between Swinton and Mexborough when she was approached from behind by an unknown man. He grabbed and sexually assaulted her before being interrupted by a passer-by, who chased him off.

A spokesman said: “We are keen to identify the good Samaritan who helped, as he later returned and kindly gave the victim a lift home.

“The suspect is described as being white and wearing a black hoody. If you witnessed anyone acting suspiciously along the canal path on Saturday, or you are the good Samaritan, please get in touch.

“Thankfully, the woman wasn’t physically injured but was left shaken."
