Whilst patrolling the vicinity of Armthorpe in Doncaster on nights last week, one of South Yorkshire Police’s operational support cars crossed paths with a Mercedes, and caught a whiff of an ‘overpowering’ smell of cannabis.

After catching up with and stopping the driver, and despite the driver’s insistence he hadn’t touched drugs, he was searched and asked to provide a saliva sample for a drugs wipe.

A small amount of cannabis was found in the car, which the driver admitted possession of.

After the drugs wipe test showed a positive reading, the driver was arrested for driving whilst over the prescribed limit and taken to the nearest custody suite.

A blood sample was taken for further testing.

A spokesman for the force said: “He will have to explain to a magistrate why he thought he shouldn’t be passing the dutchie before driving.”
