The tape ran between railings in front of a bunglow on Craganour Place, Denaby Main, and then sealed off a separate section outside the house to the rear. An officer sat in a van outside the front of the house making sure no one crossed the line, while a colleague in a marked patrol car kept watch at the back.

The street, just around the corner from the Fullerton House special school in Denaby was quiet.

One neighbour told the Free Press that the dead man was said to have been stabbed in the street a couple of weeks ago.

She believed he had suffered mental health issues and was horrfied to hear he had died.

The neighbour, who did not want to be named. said the dead man had a reputation as a heavy drinker. He had been accused in the past of causing damage to people’s cars and fences, and she had heard from a neighbour on the street that he had recently been assaulted with a knife in the street a few weeks before this death.

She said she had once been out to her kitchen and returned to find he had walked off the street into her lounge uninvited.

She said: “He had lived there for about two and a half years, and the police had been round to his house quite a lot. So had the other emergency services.”

She said the police had been at the house since Sunday.

“The police CSI (crime scene investigation) team came yesterday (Sunday). I hadn’t heard at that point that a body had been found, so it was a shock to see them there. I was wondering what was going on.

“One of my neighbours came down later and said there was a death. It hit me like a rock. People may have thought he was a nuisance sometimes, but you don’t expect anyone to be found dead just like that. You wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
