Officers from South Yorkshire Police’s ‘Fortify Team,’ dedicated to tackling serious and organised crime, uncovered the drug den after raiding an industrial unit on Swinton Road, Mexborough.

The cannabis farm contained up to 2,000 plants.

South Yorkshire Police said one man found in the property was arrested but has since been released and is now being treated ‘as a potential victim of trafficking’.

The force said: “He is being supported by specialist officers and agencies.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

The cannabis farm is believed to be one of the largest ever unearthed in South Yorkshire.

Officers involved in the raid used a chain saw to gain entry to the building by opening up a door.
