Sheffield Crown Court heard on July 7 how Bradley Presley, aged 26, had been spotted by police in Rotherham before he sped away, reached speeds of 100mph on the M1, drove on the wrong side of the road, went through red traffic lights and forced others to take evasive action.

Jade Abraham, prosecuting, said: “Officers were on patrol in a marked vehicle on Thorpe Street, Rotherham, and became aware of the Volkswagen Golf on Brook Hill, revving its engine and spinning its tyres.”

Police carried out a vehicle check before the Golf accelerated and overtook a vehicle on a blind bend as police pursued Presley, according to Ms Abraham.

Ms Abraham added Presley drove on the M1 southbound weaving across lanes at speeds in excess of 100mph forcing others to take evasive action.

She said Presley also travelled on the wrong side of the road at a roundabout at Forgemasters and went into the carriageway at Brightside at speeds of around 60mph to 70mph while driving on the wrong side of the road.

Presley, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and to driving without insurance after the incident on September 27.

Stephen Littlewood, defending, said: “He’s a young man who is clearly remorseful for his actions.”

The court heard Presley is currently serving a custodial sentence at HMP Doncaster concerning a recall but he has worked hard to abstain from drugs and address his problems.

Mr Littlewood added Presley realised what he was doing and brought the car to a stop.

Judge Rachael Harrison told Presley: “It’s possibly the worst case of dangerous driving without causing serious injury or death I have ever come across.”

She acknowledged an “inexplicable” delay in bringing the case to justice and that Presley has made efforts to address his offending.

Presley was sentenced to eight-months of custody and banned from driving for three-years and four-months.
