Ryan Chapell made the phone call at 12.30pm on December 12, last year, while the woman was at her mother's house, prosecutor Amy Earnshaw said.

He shouted abuse and said he didn't care if their children were present or not when he ran her over.

His rant was recorded from the mobile's speaker while some of their children were present, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

"A social worker described him as being extremely abusive and he told her to "get my children out of Doncaster or I will burn down the home," she added.

A non-molestation order, banning him from contacting his three children, was served on Chapell six minutes earlier.

"He denied making the calls even when they were played to him," Ms Earnshaw said. "He even suggested the caller was his brother who is serving a prison sentence."

Ms Earnshaw said the eight-year relationship had been "violent" and he threw items at her, but it ended in March last year.

His ex told police: "I believe he is a danger to me and my children. I am scared to walk the streets. I feel he would run me down in a car if he had the chance."

The court heard he has previous convictions for harassment and making threats to kill from April 2019, when he received a community order.

Robert Sandford, mitigating, said Chapell's behaviour was not justifiable but it was "impulsive".

He said the former brick-worker had already spent 90 days in custody and had undertaken courses in relationships and anger management.

Chapell, 23, of Church Balk, Thorne, pleaded guilty to breaching the non-molestation order and threats to kill at Doncaster Magistrates Court in January.

Judge David Dixon said: "Your reaction here was to lose control. When you don't like what you get you react. There is a very significant risk of harm to future partners."

He jailed Chapell for 32 months, and ruled he will not eligible for release until he has served 20 months.

A restraining order banning him from contact with the woman, except through solicitors to arrange child contact, was imposed.
