John Lee Stuart Neate entered the U Andrzeja store, in Sandringham Road, Doncaster, on November 5 this year, and took the tin containing £95.

The 29-year-old appeared before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on December 18 where he admitted the offence.

Neate, of Essex Avenue, Doncaster was jailed for a total of 28 days because magistrates deemed the offence so serious because it was committed while he was on licence and due to his history of previous offending.

He was ordered to pay £95 in compensation to the store, but magistrates wavered prosecution costs and a victim surcharge - paid by every defendant to contribute towards services to support the victims of crime - because they wanted to prioritise the compensation.

Neate’s guilty plea was taken into consideration when magistrates passed sentence.
