Doncaster bar to stay closed as police continue to probe serious assault

A Doncaster bar is to stay closed following a court order while police continute to probe a serious assault which left a man in hospital.

The Pocket in Mexborough has been shut since September 13 after police were called to deal with an incident at the sports bar and snooker hall on Bank Street.

Officers were called at 12.30am following reports that a man had been assaulted.

A 42-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Two men, aged 26 and 22, have been arrested on suspicion of GBH without intent.

The 26 year old has been bailed and the 22 year old has been released under investigation, a police statement said.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said the closure of the bar had been ratified by Doncaster Magistrates Court earlier this month.

She said: “The police have initiated a summary hearing for the premises and this will be undertaken within 28 days of the summary review application and the authority has not yet set a date for that but when agreed the date will be published as usual.”

The closure notice was issued to the pub by South Yorkshire Police within hours of the incident.

The bar, also known as The Corner Pocket, is situated in Bank Street in Mexborough and is also a sports and snooker hall.
