Victoria Bastow, who runs Rotherham-based GoodLife Dog Rescue, said Bella, a beagle cross who is less than a year old, is in her care and doing well.

The 54-year-old from Leeds said: "The dog is OK now. The main thing for me is making sure she gets rehomed to the right person, which she one hundred per cent will.

“She’s absolutely adorable, she’s just a typical young dog.”

Bella was taken to a vet on Friday, Victoria said.

She added: "She will be fine. She’s got a deformed back leg because she previously had a fracture. She hasn’t got a broken leg, it’s been fixed.

“She’s got no other injuries. She’s lovely, I’ve taken her out on a walk today.”

She said: "Due to Covid it’s almost like everyone’s looking for a dog, but it’s got to be done properly.

"It’s a massive commitment to own a dog.”

Victoria, who has volunteered in dog rescue for 10 years, added: "There’s a lot of underground breeding going on and a lot of people are breeding dogs to make money.”

A fundraising page set up to help GoodLife Dog Rescue, which runs thanks the help of dedicated volunteers, has now raised more than £2,000.

Victoria said: “It’s amazing, the support from people, and also the support people have given during Covid to smaller charities.
