Danger as motorists drive the wrong way up the M18 to avoid delays
Police were horrified to discover a number of motorists had decided that they wanted to avoid joining a motorway tailback so turned around and drove the wrong way up the carriageway.
The South Yorkshire Police operational team reported that whilst they were trying to get to a report of a car fire on the M18 near to junction four last Thursday, one of their colleagues tried to join the M18 southbound get to the incident.
They explained: “You can imagine the exclamation of surprise in our car when we came around the roundabout at junction four to find that a number of people had decided waiting in the queue wasn’t for them and they were coming up the entry slip.
"They had decided that they were far too important for that and that the rules around only going in one direction on a motorway didn’t apply to them. After all, they had kids to pick up / needed the toilet / wanted to get home / insert other excuse.
“The ones in the picture were all dealt with at the scene for what they all accepted was a particularly dangerous thing to do. The ones that managed to slip by whilst we were stunned by what we had seen should be finding a letter from us landing on their door mat.
“For the avoidance of doubt (and we can’t believe this is something that we actually have to clarify), you should only drive one way on the motorway. If you miss an exit or are unlucky enough to get caught in something that means you are stationary for a while, then you are simply stuck.”
