Burglary forces Doncaster scout group to cancel camping trips

A Doncaster scout unit has been forced to cancel its camping trips after the group's hut was broken into.

Sam Nicholls, of Askern Scouts, said thieves had taken away a petrol generator which was essential for their outdoor activities and smashed up the barbecue pit too.

"This is an old mining village, a deprived area. We have 70 children attending weekly and also fundraise to make activities affordable," she said.

“We use the generator on camps to provide lighting, entertainment and to charge leaders' phones so we can contact the parents.

"Our BBQ has been smashed up, which we also use on camps and to fundraise."

Sam added: "Leaders at the group are all volunteering their time to provide this for local kids alongside full-time jobs, lives and families."

She then urged people to contact the group if they are offered a generator for sale.

Officially known as the 19th Doncaster (Askern) Scout Group, the group caters for children aged eight to 14.

South Yorkshire Police has been approached for comment.
