The A1, close to Skellow, was brought to a standstill during the afternoon when a white Vauxhall Corsa, travelling south, was involved in a collision and rolled multiple times, before coming to rest in lane one on the northbound carriageway.

A spokesman said: “The driver was extremely lucky and escaped with minor injuries. We would like to thank everybody who helped the driver, and all motorists who waited patiently, while we dealt with the incident and re-opened the A1.

Traffic, firearms and dog officers were quickly mobilised and headed out in search of the vehicle. It was spotted on the M18 being driven at speed.

A spokesman said what resulted was: “A fast, and at times dangerous, pursuit through Doncaster, where it unfortunately collided with a van causing minor damage. Fortunately for us, it immobilised the car so the occupants gave it legs.

“Working with our fine colleagues from Doncaster (and some impressive combined sprinting from our traffic and firearms officers), we quickly had one in cuffs.”

The vehicle was recovered for CSI. Enquiries ongoing.
