Firefighters were called out to the scene by members of the public who had already seen that the blaze had broken out, and crews put the flames out.

A police spokesman said: “Officers spotted smoke in Maltby and were met with scenes normally seen on the news. Exact cause of the fire on the Crags is not yet known.

“SYFR (South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue) had already been contacted by passers by and the firefighters promptly had a water fight with the flames and won.”
