Council's anger after yobs repeated attacks on Doncaster playground

The play park has suffered a series of attacks

Yobs who have targeted a Doncaster playground - using bolt cutters to chop down swings - have come under fire from a city council.

Members of the community are now being urged to be vigilant following the incidents at Barnsley Road play area in Scawsby.

A spokeperson for Brodsworth Parish Council said: “The recent vandalism of Barnsley Road Play area has caused significant damage, resulting in repair costs that will ultimately be paid by the community.

“This is repeated vandalism on the park using bolt cutters to cut the swing chains on the basket swing and standard swing.

“The Parish Council paid additional funds to ensure some pieces were inclusive and these are the pieces that are being targeted the most.

“The play area was created to provide a safe, welcoming space where local children and families can play, exercise, and spend time together.

“Unfortunately, repeated acts of vandalism have damaged equipment and facilities, forcing costly repairs and reducing the funds available for future community improvements.”

The estimated cost of repairing the damage since the play area was installed in 2023 is £2,210 - 5% of the Parish Council precept, money that could otherwise have been invested in maintaining the park, improving local amenities, or supporting other community projects.

The park was upgraded in 2023 with a grant from FCC Foundation of £74,904.00 and investment from Brodsworth Parish Council’s reserve funds of £18,637.99.

"We are extremely disappointed to see this level of damage to a facility that exists for everyone," said Coun Frank Calladine, Chair of Brodsworth Parish Council. "Every act of vandalism takes money away from improving our community and impacts the children and families who use the play area every day."

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers if they have information about those responsible.

The spokesperson added: “The community is also being asked to take pride in protecting shared public spaces. By working together, residents can help ensure that local facilities remain safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.
