Claims Royal British Legion won’t sell poppies to avoid upsetting ‘minorities’ are false

The Royal British Legion has said poppies will be sold across the UK as normal this year, after posts began circulating saying sales would be stopped in some parts of the country to avoid upsetting ‘minorities.’

The social media posts surface every year suggesting the Remembrance flowers won’t be sold in some parts of the country because they are offensive to certain groups.

But the Royal British Legion has once again been forced to debunk the myth.

A statement said: “We are aware that there are statements online suggesting the poppy is not being offered in certain areas of the country.

"We'd like to reassure you that this is categorically untrue.

"We are proud to offer the poppy in every community in the UK — we always have been and always will be.”

One post doing the rounds reads: “I've just heard some really shocking news, The Royal British Legion are not selling poppies in certain areas on Nov 11 this year.

"This is because some minorities say that it will upset them, I say sod off ... The poppy is a symbol of reverence for our fallen heroes of all the wars the BRITISH military have fought in.

"BRITAIN STAND UP AND SAY 'WE WANT THE POPPY SOLD EVERY WERE IN THE UK'. THIS IS OUR RIGHT TO REVERE OUR FALLEN... PLEASE RE-POST”.

The RBL has said that because of coronavirus, poppy sales may be hit this year and have urged people to donate online if they are unable to buy a poppy in person.
