Her comment followed reports that the seaside town - and neighbouring resort Cleethorpes - could see its first direct link to London in almost 30 years.

The Grimsby local wrote: 'Don't think you will be saying it's good when terrorists from London get on a train and come to Grimsby. Bad idea my opinion.”

Maxton said: 'Genius, the only thing keeping Grimsby safe is the complicated rail journey.'

Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers hopes the town could see a twice-daily train, according to reports.

And Sir Edward Leigh, MP for Gainsborough, will meet Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to push for the extra LNER services to Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

Passengers currently have to switch at Doncaster onto Northern and TransPennine Express services to reach the towns.
