Asda has repeatedly denied claims of overcrowding and packed aisles at its store in Lakeside, despite dozens of shoppers complaining about ‘scuffles’ at the branch, queues for tills and shoppers ignoring social distancing.

The supermarket giant dismissed reports as ‘completely false’ and have placed the onus on customers to follow the rules.

The anonymous eyewitness said: “So this was Saturday afternoon at around 2pm.

"The car park was rammed – in store was a joke too. Safety is not being looked after at all really – there was no queuing outside what so ever. The car park was just a sea of cars

“The store is awful - its like a free for all.”

The row began last week when local businessman David Plant sent an open letter to Asda bosses and Doncaster three MPs after witnessing scenes he described as “absolute madness” and accused the firm of putting “profits before people.”

Yesterday, Asda said it needed customers to follow rules on social distancing and mask wearing and said it had not been made aware of any ‘scuffles’ at the branch.

A spokesman said: ‘’We have extensive measures in place across all of our stores such as Covid-marshals, protective screens, social distancing signage and numerous hand sanitiser stations. Our customers can rest assured that we continue to follow all government guidance as we have since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.’’
