They remain on course to do the former. Despite taking only eight points from the last 21 available, the gap to fourth remains a very healthy 11 points.

But to achieve the latter Rovers will need to show more of the swagger of champions - starting with this week’s home double-header against Cheltenham Town and Notts County.

Sean O’Driscoll’s stylish side certainly knew how to strut their stuff on their way to winning promotion to the Championship in 2008.

The League One champions of 2013 did it very differently, grinding teams down and showcasing a never-say-die spirit.

Darren Ferguson’s men have shown a mixture of those qualities on their way to reaching the League Two summit. They have gone about things very professionally, arguably without reaching top gear.

Eleven wins out of 13 games during November and January highlighted their quality at this level and during that run the performances against Hartlepool, Leyton Orient and Portsmouth all had the hallmarks of a title-winning team.

Sustaining those high standards has been more difficult over recent weeks.

But with the finish line in sight now is the time for Rovers to really stick their chests out and show their class.

Getting the job done remains the priority but it would be great to see this team show more swagger.
