Firefighters were called to the bowling green building at the sports facilities on Sutton Road, Askern, at around 6,45am today.

Two fire engines, from Askern and Adwick Fire stations, attended and crews found the building alight when they arrived.

They used two hose reels to put the flames out, leaving the site at 8.20am.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said they suspected the fire to have been started deliberately.

It is not the first time fire crews have been called out to the site, which is close to Askern Miners Welfare.

Mayor of Askern Francis Jackson said: “It sounds like this is just wanton vandalism, although I don’t think the bowling club had been using the pavilion recently.

"A building doesn’t just set fire to itself. The only saving grace is that there was that no one was injured in this fire.”
