The figures, released by Spanish air safety agency AESA, revealed 720 people have been fined €580,300 (£497,000) at Alicante's El Altet airport in the past three years.

They also claimed they had 216 criminal complaints at the popular Costa Blanca spot, with 163 involving British tourists.

Passengers can be fined up to €5,000 (£4,200) for disruptive behaviour, including being kicked off flights.

A spokesperson for AESA told Olive Press that "disruptive, inappropriate, conflicting passengers" can result in a plane being diverted, putting travellers at risk.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, 370 cases of disruptive passengers were reported in the UK last year, with fines of £5,000 for being drunk on the plane.
