Bones found at pub belong to two separate skeletons

Workmen refurbishing The Wheatsheaf Pub in Westgate Road found the remains whilst digging earlier this month.

Humberside Police were called to the scene and later established that the bones were of “archeological interest”.

An eye witness at the time said: “While the men were digging they seem to have found some bones in the footings.

“They think there are two skeletons but they were only two feet deep and were not in caskets.

“I understand they are now being tested to see if they are human.”

A Humberside Police spokesman said: “Enquiries undertaken suggest the bones to be of archeological origin and as such are to be handed to the appropriate agency.

“No further police action is expected to take place.”

Further inquiries by the Bells this week have discovered that the bones were indeed those of two separate skeletons.

At this time no authorities are confirming if they are human remains.

A spokesman for North Lincolnshire Council, to whom the remains are due to be examined once released by Humberside Police, said: “There is no further update on the bones other than there was no complete skeleton, but two left femur bones, suggesting two individuals were disturbed.

“The bones are still with the police.”

They added: “North Lincolnshire Museum have confirmed that they will take them in the near future.”

Scientific work is expected to be carried out to try and establish more details about the bones, including their age.

The NLC spokesman added: “At this stage, all we know is that the bones were found in a shallow grave about three-foot deep.”

The Wheatsheaf is the oldest pub in Belton. It is believed to date back to the early 17th century.

The only pub which is currently open in the village is The Crown, which is situated in Churchtown, following the demise of the Sir Solomon and the Steer Arms.
