Firefighters from Edlington and Rotherham Fire stations were sent to deal with the blaze in the kitchens at the Indus, on Sheffield Road Conisbrough, last night (Friday).

Two fire engines arrived at the scene at around 9pm, and spent around two and a half hours on the scene dealing with the incident, which they logged as having been caused accidentally.

No one was hurt in the incident.

It is the latest blow to hit the restaurant, which was affected by flooding several months ago.

But bosses at the venue put out a statement today telling customers they would be closed until further notice, and calling on the local community to support them.

It said: “Unfortunately due to a tragic fire yesterday we will be closed until further notice. Thankfully nobody was hurt but with a heavy heart, all our services will be at a halt including delivery.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank every single one of our customers for their ongoing support during this pandemic and we would appreciate your support and patience at this difficult time. We are hoping to run business as usual and come back stronger as soon as possible.

“We know during these uncertain times that everyone is trying to stay safe. But if any local people of Conisbrough that specialise with building renovation contracts can help us get this turned around as quickly as possible, please get in touch.”

A number of customers have contacted the Indus on social media to express their support for the venue.

One stated: “Sorry to hear about this, especially when you've recently had to cope with the flooding. Hope you can get back up and running soon.”

Another added: “Heartbreaking after having to deal with the flooding and now this fire within a few months of each other. Wishing you all a speedy recovery in this very difficult time, all the best in the future.”
