Alfie May: My dad cried when I scored my first professional goal

The 23-year-old, who joined from non-league Hythe Town last month for an undisclosed fee, marked his first appearance at the Keepmoat Stadium with a late equaliser against Luton Town last weekend.

“My mum, my dad and my little niece were at the game,” smiled May.

“I think my dad actually cried [when I scored].

“He said that he was so happy that he ran down the stairs and I think the steward got in the way!

“It was so funny when he said it.

“Hopefully it made that journey back to London a lot better.”

May scored 50 goals for Hythe in the Ryman League Division One South - level eight of the pyramid - since joining the Kent club in 2015.

And the season before that he bagged no fewer than 41 for Erith & Belvedere.

But none of those goals came close to the moment he was slotted in by Conor Grant and coolly placed a shot underneath Luton goalkeeper Matt Macey.

“It’s the proudest moment of my life I think,” said May.

“The celebration showed it.

“I just didn’t know what to do! I was jumping around, it was amazing.

“I’m used to playing in front of a few hundred fans so to do it here, I got shivers. It was a great feeling. I did the knee slide, I didn’t know what else to do!

“It was good to get my first goal but what an amazing point too.

“Luton are a strong side so we were happy with a point.”

He added: “The manager just said go on and work hard so I did that and played on the last man as I do.

“Conor rolled me in and my eyes lit up. It was nice, it went through the keepers’ legs.

“Their captain actually said it made a big difference me coming on because he was used to target men and holding them up whereas I was just playing on the last man which made it difficult for him.”
